One person is in custody and another is in critical condition after a stabbing at the University of Virginia.
Just before 4:50 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, the UVA Police Division posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, warning students and faculty of an “active attacker with [a] knife,” and encouraging them to “RUN HIDE FIGHT.”

News of the stabbing prompted the university to announce a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted at 5:44 p.m. after police announced a suspect was in custody.
Police have since provided more details on the incident, which began at 4:38 p.m. with officers receiving report of a stabbing near 100 Emmet St. S, across from the Alumni Hall.
One person was stabbed. They were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Neither the suspect — identified only as a middle-aged man — nor the victim, have any known affiliation with UVA, according to police.
This was the second time this week that UVA had to shelter in place due to a suspect on the run. The incident on Tuesday, Feb. 25 involved a suspect that Virginia State Police (VSP) said evaded a traffic stop and hit multiple cars, including a VSP vehicle.
