AG Miyares Joins Effort To Challenge Biden’s Title IX Changes

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has joined a coalition of Republican attorneys general from multiple states in opposition to new Title IX regulations aimed at safeguarding victims of campus sexual assault and LGBTQ+ students’ rights. Miyares labeled the alterations as a “dangerous overhaul” of Title IX, expressing concerns about its impact on students, families, and schools in Virginia. The move follows the Youngkin administration’s revisions to transgender student policies in the state.

The Biden Administration’s updates to Title IX rules, scheduled for implementation on August 1, have sparked legal challenges. Advocates argue that these changes are crucial for protecting civil rights, particularly for LGBTQ+ students, ensuring equal education opportunities for pregnant and parenting students, and preventing discrimination and harassment.

The new rules expand protections against sex-based harassment and discrimination, outline schools’ obligations to address complaints promptly and equitably, and clarify definitions related to sex discrimination. They also emphasize the importance of transparency in schools’ nondiscrimination policies and safeguard student privacy.
