Thanksgiving morning took a troubling turn as three House Democrats from Connecticut—Reps. Jahana Hayes, Jim Himes and John Larson—received bomb threats, sparking a swift response from law enforcement. While the threats were ultimately deemed not credible, the incidents underscored a disturbing trend of politically motivated violence.
Threats Received and Investigated
Jim Himes: Representative Himes reported a bomb threat targeting his home in Greenwich, where he was celebrating Thanksgiving with his family. Law enforcement, including the U.S. Capitol Police, Greenwich Police and Stamford Police, responded promptly. “There is no place for political violence in this country,” Himes said, expressing gratitude for law enforcement’s swift action and urging peace during the holiday season.
Jahana Hayes: At 7:47 a.m., Hayes was notified of a threat claiming a pipe bomb had been placed in her mailbox. Local, state and federal authorities cleared the scene after finding no evidence of explosives. Hayes thanked law enforcement, stating, “Their actions demonstrate there is no place in our country for political violence,” and wished everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
John Larson: Larson’s home in East Hartford was also targeted. Police quickly determined no bomb was present, and the congressman and his family were safe. Larson praised the professionalism of local law enforcement and expressed relief that his colleagues were also unharmed.
A Larger Pattern of Threats
These incidents follow recent threats against members of the incoming Trump administration. Incoming White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reported that nearly a dozen of President-elect Donald Trump‘s Cabinet nominees and appointees were targeted earlier this week with bomb threats and “swatting” attacks. Leavitt condemned the violent threats as “un-American,” and thanked law enforcement for their quick response.
Political Violence on the Rise?
As the Christmas season unfolds, these events highlight an alarming escalation of politically motivated threats. While no injuries or credible explosives were found in these cases, the increasing frequency of such threats raises concerns about safety and civility in political discourse.
Even on a day meant for gratitude and togetherness.
