Cao, Kiggans, and Vega Highlight Virginia’s Role In Midterms

The Republican nominees in Virginia’s three most competitive congressional districts appeared on “America’s Newsroom” on Fox News Monday morning to share which electoral issues are impacting their races the most in the Commonwealth. Hung Cao, Jen Kiggans and Yesli Vega are all working to flip seats that are presently held by Democrats but were Republican-held before the 2018 midterm elections. See more

Kiggans said during the segment that the economy was the number one issue for voters in her district and that “Republicans were ready to stop the wasteful spending” in Washington. A Christopher Newport University poll, which was shared during the Fox segment emphasized that same point, noting that the economy and inflation are the leading concerns of Virginia voters this year. Thirty-one percent of poll respondents highlighted that issue as their top one, and the issues of abortion and gun violence only represented the top concern of 8% and 7% of poll participants, respectively. Notably, the issue of education – which Republicans are highlighting at campaign rallies throughout the Commonwealth this year – didn’t even appear on the list of voters’ concerns in the CNU poll. Vega said that despite the results of the poll, she was hearing from voters on the ground that parents are in fact concerned with how radical the “Democrat party has become when it comes to parental rights.” During his part of the segment, Cao said that parents’ rights are the biggest issue in his district, outside of the economy. Kiggans also hit on a historic first in her race – two female veterans running against one another. National prognosticators are continuing to shift their electoral predictions in favor of Republicans. RealClearPolitics is currently predicting that Republicans will pick up between 15 and 48 House seats next week, with an average predicted gain of 31.5. The Cook Political Report ranks both VA-02 and VA-07 as toss-ups and VA-10 as “Likely Democrat.”
