Despite President Donald Trump signing an executive order last week to put a stop to immigration officials separating children from their families at the border, he is still going forth with his “zero tolerance” immigration policy set to curb the amount of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Following this news, a new CBS poll shows that more than half of Americans are with the President on his campaign promises regarding immigration as 51 percent of people believe building a wall along the southern border is a good idea.
According to the poll in which 2,063 adults were questioned, 32 percent of Americans believe that “a wall along the U.S. Mexican border” is a “good idea that can probably be completed.” As well, 19 percent of those polled answered that the wall is a “a good idea that should be tried, even if it cannot be completed.” 48 percent of respondents believed the wall was a “bad idea.”
President Trump has long promised a “big, beautiful wall” along the border with Mexico to help stave off illegal forms of immigration to the U.S. However, gridlock in Congress, even with a Republican majority in the House and Senate, has stopped the President from being granted one of his top campaign promises.
According to a report from Town Hall, liberal commentator Andrew Sullivan recently argued that Democratic representatives should give Trump, “his f*cking wall.” Sullivan added, “He won the election. He is owed this. It may never be completed; it may not work, as hoped. But it is now the only way to reassure a critical mass of Americans that mass immigration is under control, and the only way to make any progress under this president.”
President Trump has given proposals on bills numerous times regarding immigration and the border wall. Earlier this year, he offered to provide a “pathway to citizenship” to the 1.8 million protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Act and the DREAMers. However, failed deals on immigration led to a government shutdown in January after congressional Democrats refused to give President Trump the $25 billion needed for border wall construction.
Some in Congress, on the other hand, believe there has been a deal on DACA and the border wall, but the Trump Administration declined the efforts in hope of getting a “better deal.”
Recently, on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator Angus King (I-ME), who typically votes against Trump, said that, “Mike Rounds [R-SD] and I had an amendment, it was the one that got the most votes on the floor of the Senate. We got 54 votes. It was in a sense DACA for the wall. And the wall was fully funded. The Democratic Caucus voted, I think, 46 out of 48 members, 49 members for it. That was a hard sell. But the White House itself torpedoed the bill. They threatened to veto, they sent out a scurrilous press release from DHS and we had the votes. We had probably 65, 67 votes. They killed it. They had the wall in their hand and they let it go because they wanted more.”
