Deadly Airplane Crash in Virginia waters; two rescued, one confirmed dead

A U.S. Navy aircraft crashed Wednesday evening in the waters of Chincoteague in Accomack County, Virginia.

The crash has left one person dead, while two people have been rescued by the Coast Guard. Lt. Cmdr. Rob Myers, a public affairs officer with Naval Air Force Atlantic, said the plane was doing a routine exercise when it went down, and confirmed that the type of plane was a U.S. Navy E2-D.

While their names have not been released yet, three people were confirmed to be on board in total. Two injured people were rescued and one was found dead in the aircraft, Myers said, WAVY reported. The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the crash by used helicopter crews and a lifeboat to rescue two crew members; they have non-life-threatening injuries.

In a tweet Wednesday night, Virginia Congresswoman Elaine Luria said she’s “keeping our naval aviators, their families, and our first responders in my thoughts and prayers.”
