Facing a recall election and following allegations of a sexual assault scandal within the district, a member of the Loudoun County School Board has resigned.

As National Review reports:

“Please accept this letter as my formal resignation from the Loudoun County School Board effective November 2, 2021,” Beth Barts wrote in a Facebook post. “This was not an easy decision or a decision made in haste. After much thought and careful consideration, it is the right decision for me and my family.”

Barts was already facing a recall attempt by a parent group called Fight for Schools, which accused Barts of initiating a “targeting campaign” against parents who opposed critical race theory.

Her resignation comes days after Scott Smith told the Daily Wire the school board tried to suppress details of his daughter’s sexual assault in a school bathroom.

The student that allegedly assaulted Smith’s daughter was later accused of groping another girl at a different high school.

Smith said he attempted to bring up the incident at a school board meeting in June but officials prevented him from doing so. He became irate after district superintendent Scott Ziegler claimed the suspect didn’t exist.

However, Ziegler is offering an apology today. (Fox News)

Superintendent Scott Ziegler apologized for saying during a June event that the Virginia district had no record of assaults taking place in its bathrooms. His comments came amid debate about policy changes related to self-identified transgender students. Ziegler said Friday that he misunderstood the question when he made the comment.

Ziegler also said he is “sorry that we failed to provide the safe, welcoming, and affirming environment that we aspire to provide.” He told affected students and families: “We acknowledge and share in your pain and we will continue to offer support to help you and your families through this trauma.”
