Following a spirited event at his alma mater, Middletown High School, J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, took off from Dayton, Ohio, aboard Trump Force Two. His destination? A crucial rally in Radford, Virginia, on Monday evening.

The Rally and Its Significance

Scheduled to address supporters at 6 pm, Senator Vance aimed to highlight what he views as the failures of the Biden-Harris administration. According to a campaign announcement, Senator Vance will speak to how the Biden-Harris agenda has failed the great people of Virginia. In fact, it claimed, since taking office, Bidenflation has cost the average family in Virginia nearly $28,000.

“Virginians aren’t just paying the price for the Biden-Harris policies with their wallets, but also with their lives. Crooked Joe Biden and Cackling Co-Pilot Kamala Harris’s pro-criminal and open border polices have spiked crime rates and drug overdose deaths as criminals and drugs flow freely over the border and into Virginia communities. In 2022, 1,951 Virginians were killed by fentanyl poisoning,” the statement concluded.

Political Context

Political Analyst Dr. Ed Lynch emphasized the importance of Vance’s visit to Virginia, telling 10 News Roanoke that “Virginia is in play for the first time in several election cycles.”

Lynch says Trump choosing Vance as his running mate is a calculated move.

“Donald Trump clearly wanted to appeal to younger voters,” said Lynch. “He wanted to have a contrast, I think, between the Republican ticket and the Democratic ticket.”

Vance is the first millennial to be nominated as a vice presidential candidate. He grew up in a working-class family in Ohio.

“If you watch Vance’s acceptance speech, somehow Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania kept coming up in a way that, say, Nevada and Colorado and Texas did not come up,” said Lynch. “They’re going for the working class vote.”

A recent poll from Virginia Commonwealth University showed Trump narrowly leading President Biden, although within the margin of error.

It’s unclear if the political landscape in the Old Dominion has further shifted since President Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Kamala Harris. Polls conducted the day after show Trump leading Harris nationally by 6 points, according to Forbes/HarrisX, and by 5 points in Georgia, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
