Loudoun County Sheriff Chapman: “Wexton Hasn’t Called Me In Three Years”

While speaking at an RNC-sponsored event in favor of VA-10 nominee Hung Cao last week, Loudoun County, VA Sheriff Mike Chapman said that Democrat incumbent Jennifer Wexton hasn’t called him in three years.

“I’ve been the Sheriff now for almost 11 years. When I was first elected we had a good relationship – a very good relationship with Congressman Frank Wolf … Barbara Comstock came in and we did all kinds of things. We did forums on heroin abuse, opium use, and what we could do to stop this problem. Then what happened was Jennifer Wexton got elected …  I called her when she was first elected as a courtesy to let her know, hey look congratulations. I never got a call back.I called her again, never got a call back. The most tumultuous two years that we have had nationwide in law enforcement, the most tumultuous two years. You’re talking about qualified immunity, taking rights away, cops being charged for everything, and being videotaped. All the obstacles that we have to do, and all the legislation going on as a result of that, a lot of things. State legislation, a lot of activity federally … In all that, not a single phone call from Jennifer Wexton – not one in the most tumultuous two years that we have ever seen in this country in my 44 years of law enforcement, ”  Sheriff Chapman said at last Thursday’s event.

Chapman was first elected in 2011 and took office in January of 2012. He has since been re-elected in 2015 and 2019.

Despite being an elected Republican in a traditionally Democrat-leaning county, Chapman is held in high regard by large swaths of his electorate because he is effective at his job.

The Loudoun Times reported in November of 2021 – less than a year ago – that a “Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments report found Loudoun to have the lowest crime rate in the D.C. region.”

Sheriff Chapman was also chosen last month as the county’s “Favorite Public Servant” for the second year in a row, according to a Loudoun Now readers poll.

If Wexton was truly the moderate she likes to pitch herself as, Chapman would be the kind of cross-party ally she should love to have in her corner – a prime example of working across the political aisle for the benefit of her constituents.

Instead, Wexton has embraced the “Defund the Police” wing of the Democrat party and isn’t afraid to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with others on the left that like such rhetoric as well. She’s been endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, both groups that seek to demonize law enforcement.

Sadly, Wexton isn’t even the only Northern Virginia Democrat to embrace the “Defund the Police” movement. Despite his recent claims, VA – 08 Congressman Don Beyer also has a longstanding record of having pro “Defund the Police” groups as his bedfellows. Beyer’s opponent Karina Lipsman had several of her campaign signs defaced in the 8th district last week, with one of the spraypainted messages reading “F12” which is a slang term for “f**k the police.”

Even Abigail Spanberger, the Democrat incumbent in VA-07 who publicly rejects the extremists of her party as well as Speaker Nancy Pelosi still votes with them – including in instances of limiting the resources of law enforcement.

Wexton, Beyer, and Spanberger all voted to enact H.R.7120 – the  George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020.

As previously reported in The Republican Standard, the Virginia Police Benevolent Association (VAPBA) has endorsed Republican challengers Karina Lipsman, Hung Cao, and Yesli Vega this year against Democrat incumbents Don Beyer, Jennifer Wexton, and Abigail Spanberger, respectively.

The VAPBA represents “law enforcement officers employed by federal, state, county and municipal governments.”
