Four earlier polls this week have all shown the same thing: a neck and neck race between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin.
One from Christoper Newport University (CNU) shows Republican nominees for lieutenant governor, Winsome Sears, and attorney general, Jason Miyares, have erased the leads held by their Democratic opponents.
As Portsmouth’s WAVY-TV reports:
The poll was based on 944 interviews of registered Virginia voters from October 17-25, according to CNU’s Wason Center for Civic Leadership. CNU says Democrat Hala Ayala has a 1-point lead in polling in the lieutenant governor’s race over Republican Winsome Sears, 49% to 48%, with a margin of error of +/- 3.5%.
Ayala and Sears are running to become Virginia’s first female lieutenant governor. Sears first broke through in Virginia politics in 2001 when she defeated an incumbent Democrat in a majority black district—becoming the first Republican candidate to do since 1865.
Incumbent Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring is up on Republican Jason Miyares 48% to 47%.
Before becoming the nominee for attorney general, Jason Miyares won election to represent Virginia Beach in the House of Delegates. As a former assistant commonwealth’s attorney, Miyares is emphasizing his prosecutorial bona fides as homicides in Virginia have increased.
Meanwhile, the governor’s race remains deadlocked.
McAuliffe holds a 49% to 48% lead over Youngkin.
CNU’s poll earlier this month had McAuliffe up four points, 49% to 45%. A Nexstar/Emerson College poll released around the same time had McAuliffe at 49% and Youngkin at 48%.
CNU’s poll also shows an enthusiasm gap benefiting Republicans. But whether that will manifest as a turnout gap on Election Day remains to be seen. Ultimately, races come down to who shows up.
