On Northam, Does the Press Think No One is Watching?

Sometimes it seems like Democrats and the press don’t think anyone is paying attention.

President Trump held a rally in Green Bay last week, and during his usual free form remarks, he once again took Governor Ralph Northam and other Democrats to the woodshed for their views on abortion. As reported by CNN:

“The baby is born,” Trump said. “The mother meets with the doctor. They take care of the baby. They wrap the baby beautifully, and then the doctor and the mother determine whether or not they will execute the baby. I don’t think so…”

“…Until this crazy man in Virginia said it, nobody even thought of that,” Trump said. “Did anyone even think of that? You hear late-term, but this is when the baby is actually born, it came out, it’s there, it’s wrapped and that’s it.”

Naturally, CNN and other media outlets have flipped out, once again calling President Trump a liar. Brian Stetler, the host of CNN’s Reliable Sources, devoted significant time to the comments, with a panel of outraged critics slamming Trump.

It’s true that President Trump has all the rhetorical subtlety of a Category 5 hurricane. But in this instance, there’s no getting around the facts — Democrats have repeatedly said they’re open to allowing infants to die without medical care.

When Ralph Northam was asked about Del. Kathy Tran’s abortion bill, he said he supported it — a bill that would have allowed only one doctor, instead of three, to approve an abortion at 40 weeks when the “health” of the mother was in jeopardy, weakening the existing standard from “life.”

Northam, in an attempt to rebut arguments that the bill would allow for abortion at 40 weeks, said this:

“I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”

There’s no getting around the fact that Governor Northam said that an infant who was alive at birth could be denied medical care if her mom chose to do so.

After the initial disaster, Northam held a press conference with abortion supporters, along with Lt. Governor Fairfax and Attorney General Herring. He said he did not regret his remarks, and refused to clarify them.

Even Snopes, no friend to conservative views, was forced to concede that “his remarks did lack precision and clarity of meaning to the extent that they raised reasonable questions about what exactly he was proposing or advocating.”

Northam’s comments so outraged some of his fellow medical school classmates that they outed his infamous yearbook photos. Republicans in Congress brought forward a bill that would have made it a crime to deny any infant born alive medical care, even if that birth was the outcome of a failed abortion.

Democrats, including Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, voted no. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refuses to let a similar bill in the House even come to the floor for a vote.

In less than 90 days, Democrats have said:

• Medical care for newborn infants in some cases is a choice, not a requirement.
• Blocked legislation that would require any child born alive to get medical care.

Some things truly aren’t spinnable. Democrats and the media must truly think the public isn’t paying attention. They are. And they don’t like what they see.
