Heading into the holiday weekend, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed—or feigned—concerns for President-elect Donald Trump‘s safety, alleging that the attacks on Trump and his family have reached levels even criminal organizations in Russia would not employ. Putin’s comments, seen by many as an attempt to ingratiate himself with Trump, came during remarks in which he also praised the incoming president’s intelligence and caution.

“Absolutely uncivilized methods have been used against Trump,” Putin stated, referencing what he described as an ongoing series of challenges Trump has faced, including alleged assassination attempts. “I think he’s not safe even now.”

Putin went further, lamenting the treatment of Trump’s family. “Not only was Trump subjected to humiliating court procedures and accusations, but his family was attacked as well. His children were attacked. Gangsters don’t do this.”

“I think President Trump is a smart person and a cautious one,” Putin continued, expressing confidence in his capacity to navigate these pressures.

Analysts believe that Putin’s comments may serve broader geopolitical objectives amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, which remains the most significant issue for Moscow.

On Wednesday, Trump appointed retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg as special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, entrusting him with the mission of facilitating peace negotiations amid the ongoing quagmire.

Initially a low-intensity conflict, the fighting escalated into a devastating all-out war following Russia’s attempted blitzkrieg on Ukraine on February 2022. Within days, the advance on Kyiv stalled, and as of mid-September 2024, estimates indicate up to 1,000,000 casualties on both sides.
