VA-07 Candidate Anderson Announces New Endorsement

One of Virginia’s most-watched 2024 races just got more interesting.

Republican Derrick Anderson announced today an endorsement from Iowa Congressman Zach Nunn in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District race.

Anderson is a Special Forces Green Beret, and Nunn is an Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel and airborne intelligence officer.

Per a media release from Anderson’s campaign:

Congressman Nunn said: “Virginia, my fellow veteran Derrick Anderson deserves your support. I served for nearly 20 years as an airborne intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force. While folks like me were protecting the skies, folks like Derrick — a Special Forces Green Beret — were on the ground working to keep America safe. I’ve been honored to continue my fight for this country in Congress, and I’m asking folks in Virginia’s 7th to send Derrick to Congress so he can do the same.”

Sharing the endorsement, Anderson said:

“Congressman Nunn served our country with distinction and I appreciate his support. We’re seeing great momentum on the ground and around the country because people recognize that I’m ready to fight for a better life for folks who live in Virginia’s 7th District.”

Anderson is also supported by national figures like Speaker Mike Johnson, Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, and Senator Tom Cotton.

According to Federal Elections Commission filings, Anderson raised over $300,000 in the last quarter of 2023.

VA-07 is again shaping up to be a hotly contested race this year. Incumbent Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger is not seeking re-election after choosing to pursue the Virginia Governor’s mansion in 2025. Spanberger beat Republican Yesli Vega in 2022 with 52.2% of the vote to Vega’s 47.6%. The Cook Political Report moved VA-07 from Likely Democrat to Lean Democrat last November after Spanberger announced she was not seeking re-election.
