A high-speed chase between Virginia law enforcement officers and a Culpeper man ended in tragedy.
Jeremy Yates, 21, of Culpeper, died when his 2018 Chevrolet Colorado crashed in Rappahannock County during a multi-agency pursuit.
The chase kicked off after the Culpeper Police Department sent out an all-points bulletin, following the issuing of an emergency custody order for Yates. Officers were told that he may be armed.
Yates first shot at Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who promptly returned fire. Later, he shot at Madison County Sheriff’s Office cruisers pursuing his vehicle before veering off road and crashing.
Authorities transported Yates’ body to the Manassas Coroner’s Office for an autopsy. An investigation by Virginia State Police is ongoing.

As Yates headed south on Route 707, Slate Mills Road, near the intersection of Route 644, Reva Road, he began shooting at Culpeper County Sheriff’s Deputies who were stopped in the roadway. The deputies then shot back. Afterward, Yates ran off the left side of the road, crashing into an embankment and subsequently overturning his car.
Deputies attempted to give him aid, but he died on the scene.
Two handguns were recovered from the Chevrolet.
No deputies or other persons were injured during the incident. No citizens have reported their vehicles being struck by bullets from when Yates was firing at other vehicles.
