America’s favorite lieutenant governor, Winsome Sears showed off her characteristic resourcefulness yesterday when “an unknown prankster” hid her gavel.
The imaginative Sears used one of her leather pumps to bring the Virginia Senate to order.

As The Washington Post’s Laura Vozzella succinctly reported, Sears “took the trick in stride.”
Sears went on to sign state senate bill SB739, allowing parents to opt out of school mask mandates.

From the senate chamber, the bill proceeded to Gov. Youngkin’s desk.

Sears was elected alongside Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin in November 2021, making her the first black woman lieutenant governor in the history of Virginia.

Sears expressed a desire on Feb. 4 to form a new black caucus in Virginia after the Virginia Black Caucus rejected a delegate’s membership due to their Republican affiliation.
