Incumbent 5th District Congressman Bob Good has a serious challenger in State Senator John McGuire.
Per the Federal Election Commission’s campaign finance reports, McGuire raised $212,421.86, and Good raised $204,983.32 in the last quarter of 2023.
McGuire announced his primary challenge to Good last November, shortly after winning election to the State Senate after serving in the Virginia House of Delegates since 2018.
McGuire shared the following sentiments in a media release sent out by his team today:
I’m running for Congress to save Virginia and make America great again — and we know that re-electing President Trump and giving him backup in Congress is the only way to get that done. Bob Good cannot be trusted to deliver on the America First policies of President Trump, and in fact has worked to undermine Trump.
I am humbled by the tremendous support we have received so far, but we have a long way to go. I am a Day One Trump supporter, I have served my country as a Navy SEAL, and now I am asking for the honor to serve one more mission as representative for the people of Virginia’s 5th District.”
Support of former President Trump has been emphasized by McGuire’s team during the course of the campaign. Good originally endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis before endorsing Trump for re-election after DeSantis dropped out of the race after the Iowa Caucuses last month.
Good is no stranger to competitive primary elections. In 2020, he himself primaried former Congressman Denver Riggleman and ousted him in the district convention.
