Republican challenger John McGuire has defeated Virginia Congressman Bob Good in a nail-biter primary battle for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.

Following today’s certification of election results, John McGuire released the following statement:

“Number one, I want to thank God. We could not have done this without my wife Tracy, our incredible team, and of course Trump! This is the honor of a lifetime. I look forward to continuing our fight for Virginia families every day in Congress. I humbly ask for your support in November, both for my campaign and for President Donald J. Trump. Without Trump and a Republican Congress, we will lose our great country.”

House Freedom Caucus Chair Bob Good (R) is projected to narrowly lose his primary in Virginia to Trump-backed challenger John McGuire, delivering the former president a victory in one of the cycle’s most tumultuous nominating contests, according to Decision Desk HQ.

McGuire declared victory the night of Virginia’s primary despite only leading by approximately 300 votes.

He’s less than a point behind his challenger, state Senator John McGuire. If I can see that right now, it’s like 342 votes, forget the point 342 votes, that is remarkable. Here now. CNN senior political analyst Mark Preston. Still a lot of votes to be counted here. Mark, what’s going on in this race?”
