As Veterans Day approached, FOX Sports held a special broadcast honoring military service members, live from San Diego Naval Base. Yet, amid the patriotic setting, a gesture—or lack thereof—from FOX analyst and former NFL star Michael Strahan sparked backlash. Standing solemnly while the national anthem played, Strahan chose not to place his hand over his heart, setting off a storm of criticism online.
Social Media Outcry
In the company of colleagues Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Jimmy Johnson, and Rob Gronkowski, each visibly displaying their respect with hands on their hearts, Strahan’s stance drew attention. Critics quickly labeled the move as “disrespectful” and even “unpatriotic,” arguing that he failed to honor the military personnel present.

Here’s a sampling of the comments:
One viewer tweeted, “If you can’t respect our military, you need to be removed from the NFL ON FOX!! GOOD BYE STRAHAN!!”
Another comment read, “Strahan disrespected every service member. Someone needs to remind him the reason for his freedom is our BRAVE men and women in the military.”
Strahan Responds to the Controversy
In response, Strahan posted a heartfelt tribute to his late father, Major Gene W. Strahan Sr., on Instagram, sharing a photograph from his father’s military service. Strahan’s post read:
“Thank you to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day. Your selfless service is beyond measure. Just as I honor my father, I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank You.”
However, his words didn’t quell the backlash. Many fans remained unswayed, interpreting the post as damage control rather than genuine patriotism.
Absence from Good Morning America
The controversy intensified when Strahan was absent from his regular co-hosting role on Good Morning America on Monday. Fans were quick to speculate whether his absence was connected to the incident, though no official comment was made by ABC.
