A Drive Worth Taking: Bald Top Brewery

This past weekend, Coco and I took a scenic drive out of town—just a short trip up Highway 29—to Madison County, where we discovered a real Virginia gem: Bald Top Brewery.

Set against the timeless backdrop of the Woodbourne Manor House, this brewery isn’t just about great beer—it’s a living tribute to our Commonwealth’s storied past-both good and bad. The land has seen its share of American history, from the Civil War and slavery, and old-world craftsmanship to Southern hospitality and a few ghost tales whispered through the generations.

Bald Top Brewery might just have the most breathtaking view of any brewery in Virginia—and that’s saying something. True to its name, the grounds slope away from the central brewery and patios, offering panoramic views of the Blue Ridge countryside. Scattered throughout the rolling lawn are picnic tables with umbrellas, ideal for families, couples, or groups of friends.

The grounds are friendly to both children and dogs, and there were plenty of both in evidence.  This is a family-friendly location in the best sense, though the spacing of the tables left several couples—obviously on dates—with plenty of privacy for conversation.

The beer is truly excellent, as I’ve learned to expect from most of Virginia’s rural breweries.  The pizza—as the picture documents—is hot and delicious.

The layout of the grounds is perhaps the most conducive I’ve seen in the area, with an incredibly varied choice of seating arrangements, all with different “vibes.” Stay inside for a cozy pub atmosphere, relax on the porch or rooftop with neighbors, or head for a quiet table under the trees. There’s even a large covered pavilion available for special events, and the Manor House itself can host more formal gatherings—ideal for weddings, reunions, or patriotic celebrations.

One thing that stood out—aside from the mountain air and the cold beer—was the kindness of the staff. Kitchen manager Daniel Mintz personally brought out water for Coco, a small gesture that speaks volumes about the place.

This is a great venue with great people.  Oh—with great beer and pizza.

Take the drive down Highway 29.  You won’t regret it.
