Andres Caceres Jaldin, 26, was caught on camera picking up a young girl near an indoor play area at Fair Oaks Mall on the morning of July 18, according to police. The child’s parent quickly intervened, and Caceres Jaldin fled the scene before officers arrived.
He later told authorities he was trying to help the girl find her parents, NBC 4 News reported, citing the criminal complaint. The police report states Caceres Jaldin has no fixed address.
Fairfax County Police responded to the incident just before noon and quickly identified the suspect. Detectives traced Caceres Jaldin to an Extended Stay hotel in nearby Chantilly and discovered he had allegedly stolen a car from a local auto body shop before the alleged abduction, the outlet reported. Officers found the vehicle abandoned near the Fair Oaks Mall parking lot.
He was charged with abduction of a minor and grand larceny and is being held without bond at the Fairfax County Detention Center.
Court records reviewed by the outlet show Caceres Jaldin has an arrest record dating back to early 2024, including charges for assault and battery, malicious wounding and destruction of property — with his own parents and brother reportedly among the victims.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Caller that, contrary to some unverified reports, Caceres Jaldin is a U.S. citizen.
