Rep.  (D-Va.) announced that he will resign from the powerful  and will not seek reelection in 2026 following the recurrence of a long-standing battle with .

Connolly, who has represented Northern ‘s 11th District since 2009, said in a statement that while he had hoped to continue serving after “grueling treatments,” his cancer has returned.

“The sun is setting on my time in public service,” the veteran Democrat continued, adding, “This will be my last term in Congress. I will be stepping back as Ranking Member of the Oversight Committee soon. With no rancor and a full heart, I move into this final chapter full of pride in what we’ve accomplished together over 30 years. My loving family and staff sustain me. My extended family — you all have been a joy to serve.”

The 75-year-old lawmaker has been a prominent Democratic voice on oversight issues, often clashing with Republicans during high-profile investigations. His departure from Congress and the Oversight Committee will leave a notable vacancy as both parties gear up for contentious battles heading into the 2026 midterms.

Connolly’s seat is expected to remain safely Democratic, but his retirement opens the door to a competitive primary in a key Northern Virginia district.
