President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering Fox Business host Larry Kudlow for a prominent economic position in his incoming administration, according to multiple reports. However, Kudlow, 77, informed Trump on Friday that he’s not interested in returning to government.
Kudlow, a seasoned economist and media personality, was being eyed for either the top job at the Treasury Department or a pivotal role on the National Economic Council. The Wall Street Journal first reported the development.
This news emerges as Trump continues to hold meetings with influential figures in the financial world. On Friday, he met with hedge-fund manager Scott Bessent—formerly George Soros’ top investor—who has been regarded as a leading contender for Treasury secretary and one of Trump’s trusted economic advisers. Cantor Fitzgerald Chief Executive Howard Lutnick is also being considered to head Treasury:
Kudlow, 77 years old, served as NEC director for nearly three years, remaining in the role until the end of Trump’s time in office. He has kept in regular touch with Trump.
Bessent and Lutnick have made aggressive plays to lead the Treasury Department, with their allies making the case for them—and against the other—in public and private. The campaigning has irritated Trump, some of his advisers said, and lengthened the internal deliberations over the job as Trump considers other candidates.
Trump’s team has also discussed Robert Lighthizer, who served as U.S. trade representative during Trump’s first term, and Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan for high-profile economic roles, including Treasury secretary.
Rowan met with Trump in New York before the election, people familiar with the matter said. They discussed the state of the economy during the meeting. Trump and Rowan haven’t had a meeting since Trump won the election, one of the people said.
If selected, Kudlow’s appointment would have marked another instance of Trump drawing talent from Fox News-affiliated personalities, underscoring the network’s influence on his administration’s staffing decisions.
Kudlow has had a distinguished career spanning both television and government, marked by significant contributions in economic policy and media.
Government Service:
-Reagan Administration: In 1981, Kudlow joined President Ronald Reagan’s administration as associate director for economics and planning at the Office of Management and Budget, where he played a role in shaping economic policies during Reagan’s first term.
-Trump Administration: From 2018 to 2021, Kudlow served as director of the National Economic Council under President Donald Trump, acting as the president’s chief economic advisor and influencing key economic decisions.
Television Career:
-CNBC: Kudlow transitioned to television as a financial news host on CNBC. He co-hosted Kudlow & Cramer from 2002 to 2005, and later hosted Kudlow & Company from 2005 to 2008. His program was rebranded as The Kudlow Report, which aired from 2009 until its conclusion in 2014.
-Fox Business Network: After his tenure in the Trump administration, Kudlow returned to television in 2021 as a host on Fox Business Network, leading the show Kudlow, where he discusses economic policies and interviews business influencers.
Throughout his career, he has relentlessly advocated for free-market capitalism and supply-side economics.
